Everyone loves a comeback story, everyone is the Mack.
‘Return of the Mack’ by Mark Morrison has maintained a staple of American pop. I grew up on the east coast and spent a spell in the mid-west, but it wasn’t until I moved west to southern Cali that I realized just how important the Mack’s return is to people. At first I heard the song blaring out of car radios, thumping in the thrift store, and coffee shops. Places you expect. It wasn’t until walking out of the barber shop, one sunny afternoon, that I ran into a homeless man and his boombox blasting and singing full voice along to Mark Morrison’s hit that it really struck me the power and importance this song truly has. Everyone loves a comeback story, everyone is the Mack.
Meanwhile, anyone would be so ‘lucky’ as to have Daft Punk setting the landscape of their lyrics. The track Doing it Right has a special place in my soul. Something about the thickness of the vocoder, the sparse and spacious 808s, the mantra “everyone will be dance if you’re doing it right.” It all hits me just right. I can’t stop listening to the track.
For me, in my pop world, I’m tickled pink these 2 songs now have one another.
